Welcome to tutorial battle!
Basic commands here. Attack does a basic attack with no MP, the class title has special abilities, items let us use our items,and defend gives a stat boost for a turn to the defense stats.
Gabe has a 1 MP special ability for the first turn. Note also the bar at the top of the screen. Wait is waiting, CMD is where you input Commands and Act is when it happens. The pics slide along the bar at varying speeds. So you could put in a command after an opponent but you could theoretically act first and vice versa.
Anne-Claire strongest and most expensive character on the team.
Tycho is once again our slowest character.
He is also a healer, but he also has a way to bop every enemy.
It isn't strong but it's something.
Even Anne-Claire's basic attack is strong.

When at least one party member drops low on health the box turns green. It's a nice visual cue that was often the only way I knew I was low on health in later levels as I was too busy strategizing to care about numbers.
This fight isn't too hard all things considered. They just have a habit of ganging up on one party member.
It's a +20 magic boost! I give it to Tycho for now.

I like this mechanic. It makes the battles more varied than in the previous two games in my opinion as it becomes a little hard to get attack patterns down. In the other two episodes the battle difficulty came from learning how to block properly, here there is more variety.
You sir are awesome. He is the one who can special attack you. However it is also easy to kill him before he can if you focus your efforts on him.
This is a fairly easy fight.
